Physical Education Provision

Sport at West Wimbledon

Physical Education and School Sport is of the upmost importance to us at West Wimbledon. Our aim is to provide all children with the foundations needed to become physically literate individuals who can adapt and grow in our ever-changing society.

We continually strive to demonstrate the importance of health, well-being, competitive and recreational sport through high quality teaching and learning experiences.

We recognise that mental health and physical health are tightly woven and we encourage exercise and activity to support both.

As part of our aim to develop physically literate individuals, our children will take part in stimulating, engaging and appropriately challenged learning experiences both inside and outside. Children may learn individually, in pairs of take part in larger group games. Part of lessons will always include either cooperative or competitive games where the values of teamwork and problem solving can be explored.

Physical Education Curriculum

All of children are taught PE using the Merton School Sports Partnership (MSSP) schemes of work. These have been carefully designed to align with the National Curriculum requirements, specifically around the domain of ‘physical development’.

Our teachers in the early years support the children in their physical development as part of core PE lessons but also during continuous provision. They will build fine motor skills, gross motor skills, core strength and coordination improvement.

Children in Years 1 -6 are again taught using the MSSP schemes of work. We use coaches from the MSSP to deliver these sessions to ensure a high-quality provision. The units are sequenced and progressive and allow all pupils to participate and develop in a variety of sports, which also cover the National Curriculum objectives.

Our children attend swimming lessons in Year 4. We are exceptionally lucky to be working with Wimbledon High School for these and the standard of the sessions that the children receive is high.

Competitive Sport

Representing the school at events is something that all children wish to do. Our aim is that any child who wishes to represent the school at a sport will have that opportunity at some point during Key Stage 2. As an affiliated school to MSSP, we have a range of opportunities to compete against other schools in the Borough and often do so with good success.

In Year 5/6 children are given the opportunity to trial for ‘PE Squad’. This team of 18 children will train across the year for a range of Borough wide sports event and will be selected based on their hard work in sessions.

Alongside this, we also enter a range of ‘festival’ event where children who do not gain places at PE Squad can still take part in competitive sport.

We also recognise that some sports are very specific – for example swimming and tennis. For these events, children will be chosen based on their external participation in these sports.

PE and the Sports Premium

We use the money from the Sports Premium Grant to provide our children with equipment and experiences that have a lasting impact on the sporting lives of our children. Our membership of the MSSP enables us to allow more children to represent the school in sport.  The quality of investments that we make improves the PE provision in the school but also on the overall health and fitness of our pupils.
