Parent Resources - Sensory and OT

Sensory differences are common for our pupils. This can mean processing sensory information from everyday life can be a challenge.

The 7 senses that can be affect are:

  • Touch
  • Taste
  • Sound
  • Smell
  • Sight
  • Balance (vestibular)
  • Body awareness (proprioception)

When these senses are discussed you may hear the words hypersensitive or hyposensitive.

Hypersensitive - Overly-sensitive resulting in what may seem like overreaction

Hyposensitive - under-sensitive resulting in what may seem like under-reactions

Many of our pupils receive occupational therapy from our visiting therapists in the form of therapy, advice, programs and sensory diets. We also aim to ensure practices and strategies are embedded into daily routines.
